If you’re just starting your solar journey and want to make the most of the energy you generate, solar battery storage may be the perfect solution. Solar batteries store any excess power you’ve generated so you can use it whenever you need it. With a battery, you can still enjoy your solar energy without having to rely on the main grid — even after the sun goes down or clouds roll in. Initiatives such as the SRP (Salt River Project) battery storage incentive are meant to encourage homeowners in Arizona to install residential storage batteries.
What Is the SRP Battery Storage Incentive?
Launched on May 1, 2018, the SRP battery storage incentive is a program designed to accelerate the adoption of grid-tied energy storage in Arizona. Through the initiative, the first 4,500 residential customers who purchase and install a lithium-ion storage battery can enjoy up to $3,600 ($300 per kWh DC) in incentives.
To be eligible for the incentive, installation has to be done by a licensed solar provider. SRP has also used the program for research purposes by studying how the batteries performed, as well as their potential to support the grid.
Is the SRP Battery Storage Incentive Still Available?
Unfortunately, the program is temporarily closed as of November 2024. The rebate was available for a maximum of 4,500 customers and was meant to last for 36 months or until the limit was reached.
Why You Should Still Invest In Solar Battery Storage
Although the battery storage incentive program is no longer available, investing in solar battery storage is still a great way to reduce your energy bills. SRP is on a mission to green up the grid with solar power and you too can be part of this initiative. Investing in solar energy storage also allows you to:
Shrink your electric bills
Investing in solar panels significantly reduces your electric bill since you’re generating your own power. Adding a battery helps you store the excess power for use when there is no direct sunlight.
Gain more control over your energy usage
A battery allows you to tap into stored power even when your solar panels are not producing enough energy. This way, you can stay independent without having to rely on the grid.
Reduce your carbon footprint
Pairing solar panels with storage batteries ensures that you’re using clean energy at all times. You never have to rely on the grid when your solar panels are not producing enough power, which can make you entirely independent from changing factors like rising electricity prices.
Of course, these benefits are in addition to the many other financial advantages of using solar energy. Since the cost of installing solar batteries can be quite high, you can take advantage of Arizona solar incentives to recoup part of your investment. Even though the SRP battery incentive is no longer available, it’s a reminder to Arizona homeowners that they can take full charge of their energy usage by adding a battery to their solar system.
