Americans produce 5 million extra tons of waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s every year, according to the Worldwatch Institute. That’s three times more than what Americans produce during the rest of the year. Since landfills are filling up fast and harm the environment, everyone should do their part to cut down on the waste of the holidays. Here are a few tips to get you started! Only Cook as Much as You Need
Many Americans cook more than they need. They end up having leftovers that sit in the fridge for days, and then they throw them out. Be mindful of the amount of food you are buying, so you don’t have this extra waste.
Do Not Use Paper and Plastic Plates, Utensils and Cups
While paper and plastic products are easy because you don’t have to wash them, they add up fast. Cut down on the waste by using your regular dishes, utensils and glasses. You will have to wash them, but at least you’ll be doing your part in saving space in landfills and reducing pollutants. Plus, it’s Thanksgiving! You should be using the nice china for your family.
Use Reusable Containers for Storage
This may sound like a given, but it may seem easier just to cover something in foil or plastic wrap, or even put it in a Ziploc, and put it into the fridge. But these things get thrown out afterwards. Use your lidded plastic Tupperware or glass Pyrex containers to store your leftovers.
Use Cloth As Much as Possible
Cloths can be washed, paper towels and napkins can’t be reused. There are many beautiful cloth napkins and dish towels for this season, so choose those over disposable towels and napkins.
Start a Compost Pile
A compost pile is perfect for the holidays because you add your leftovers to it. About.com has a list of 50 things you can throw into a compost pile.
