The world is shifting from non-renewable energy sources to green and renewable ones. Solar energy is the most accessible non-renewable energy source. Nevada is one of the best states to adopt solar energy, as evidenced by the many solar panels in the greater Las Vegas area. The conditions in the Silver State are so good that anyone can install solar panels for residential or commercial use.
As one of the sunniest states in the country, Nevada is one of the best locations for adopting and using solar energy. The climate has much to do with it, but it isn’t the only incentive for adopting solar energy.
The Ease & Benefits of Installing Solar Panels [in] Las Vegas
What makes Nevada so conducive to solar energy? Here is an overview of four reasons why Nevada is a paradise for solar panels.
1. Favorable Climate
Nevada ranks third among the sunniest states in the U.S. The state enjoys consistent sunshine for an average of 294 days every year, about 90 days more than the average for other states. Notably, the state gets only 26 days of mild precipitation, an average of 5 inches of rainfall per year, and no snow, all limiting solar panels’ solar energy production capacities.
Solar energy relies entirely on sunlight, of which there is plenty in Nevada. Ideally, solar energy users don’t have to worry about running out of power for most of the year.
2. Tax Credits
Nevada’s solar energy users can also save money on their solar equipment by taking advantage of the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC). The ITC offers a 26% tax credit on the domestic cost of purchasing and installing solar equipment.
For example, if you paid $15,000 to purchase and install solar energy equipment in your home, you can claim a tax credit of (15,000 X 0.26) $3,100. You can then deduct the $3,100 from your next taxation year’s tax return.
It is also worth noting that some power utility companies and solar equipment suppliers also offer rebates on some solar equipment. NV Energy offers a 20% rebate on a Tesla Powerwall battery. Unfortunately, the state doesn’t provide tax credits, solar purchases, or installation rebates.
3. Net Metering
Solar panels often produce more solar energy than the users need. Besides storing excess energy in a solar battery, you can sell it to your power utility company. The state’s leading power utility companies buy surplus solar energy at 75% of their energy’s retail price. The companies pay in credits, meaning lower energy bills depending on your due solar energy credits.
Net metering is an excellent way to save money on energy bills using solar energy. Notably, it also helps reduce everyone’s reliance on non-renewable energy.
4. Solar Access Laws
The Nevada state government is very supportive of solar energy and formulated laws to encourage and facilitate the installation of solar panels by anyone in the state. The state’s solar access laws effectively eliminate any obstacles that may hinder the adoption of solar energy.
Essentially, no contract, including the Homeowners Association, can restrict you from installing solar panels on your property, including the Homeowners Association. The law also facilitates solar easement agreements with third parties such as neighbors to ensure your solar panels get uncontrolled exposure to sunlight – this is designed to solve issues such as trees or other structures on a neighbor’s property blocking sunlight from reaching your solar panels on your roof.
